The 1840s Plaza consists of several prominent historic
structures in the heart of Baltimore's Museum Row. The complex, a recently
designated city landmark, will create an alternative destination spot for
visitors near and far to Baltimore's Inner Harbor. It will serve as reception
site, conference hall, museum site and an inn for resting after visiting
Baltimore's many venues and enjoying the city's exciting year-round
events.
The Carroll
Mansion is a public museum named for its most famous occupant, Charles
Carroll of Carrollton, the only Catholic and last surviving signer of the
Declaration of Independence. Tours cover all aspects of the building's history
and the lives of those who lived here. 410-605-2964 or
www.carrollmuseums.org.
The Phoenix Shot Tower, built in 1828, was
the tallest building in the United States until 1846. Shot for small game
hunting was made in the tower until 1892. Light shows and tours are available
free. 410-605-2964 or www.carrollmuseums.org.
The Gardens on the PlazaThe
promenade from the Fava Building to the Carroll Mansion is lined with boxwood
and flowers appropriate the 1840s period. A herb garden sits next to the
Carroll Mansion and signs tell the historic uses of the plaza.
The 1840s Ballroom is the home of the 1840s Ballroom, a unique
and elegant conference, party and reception venue located on the fourth floor.
The Ballroom features panoramic views of the Inner Harbor and murals of
Baltimore in the 1840's. A restaurant, Latin night club and lounge will soon
occupy the first three floors of the building, bringing even more excitement to
the Plaza as a center for entertainment.
1840s
Carrollton Inn Adjacent to the Carroll Mansion and just across the
plaza's courtyard from the 1840s Ballroom, a private garden oasis invites
guests to visit and experience the comfort and charm of the 1840s Carrollton
Inn. The inn's thirteen luxury guest rooms and suites offer elegant decor,
fireplaces, whirlpool tubs, gourmet breakfast and all of today's modern
amenities with the personal service of a small boutique bed & breakfast.
